For the past 9 years mature art students have been enjoying a fun art holiday at Caserma Carina under the tuition of Dr Teresa Witz: www.teresawitz.com . With many students returning year after year it’s like welcoming old friends back. The week is carefully planned each year to include trips out to places of artistic interest, wine tasting, museums, leather workshop, art exhibitions and local markets. But after popular demand there’s also plenty of time for just painting and relaxing in the grounds at CC (usually with a nice glass of wine). The week certainly isn’t just about sketching and painting; there’s a lot of time spent enjoying delicious cuisine and wine at the many local restaurants, a fun pizza making evening and even a cooking class one year under the guidance of chef Guida. In fact we have considered renaming the week “The art of eating and drinking.”
Teresa Witz is an internationally renowned portrait painter of modern icons – celebrity, athlete, and sporting figures – as well as accepting individual commissions for portraits. A year after achieving her Doctorate in Fine Art, she was appointed one of the official Olympic artists for the London 2012 Games. These paintings were shown around Britain in the run up to the Games and were then exhibited at Heathrow’s T5 Gallery. Copies of the paintings were produced for a special outside installation over the entire duration of the Olympics. They were exhibited throughout Jubilee Park at Canary Wharf – one of London’s main social hubs for enjoying the Games.
So what can you expect on a typical day during your week? Well, a relaxing breakfast in your apartment to start your day off. We hire a minibus for the week so Dean will be ready to take you out around 9.30 in the morning. Trips out are usually kept to an hour’s drive away so by 10.30 you’ll have arrived at your destination and you’ll probably be sat in an ancient piazza enjoying a cappuccino before heading off to find a place to sketch. Packed lunches are supplied on days out so you’ll all get together around lunchtime to compare notes. We aim to have you back to CC for mid-afternoon where you can pour yourself a nice glass of wine and transform your morning’s sketching into a masterpiece in the tranquillity of the gardens helped along by Teresa who’ll always be on hand. Afterwards, maybe a dip in the pool, catch an amazing sunset and relax before getting ready to go out for dinner at one of our chosen local restaurants. You’ll be given projects to work through during your stay but also plenty of time to do your own projects. An informal exhibition of all the work produced is held on the last evening followed by more delicious food and wine.
It’s a fun week full of laughs, banter, a love affair with everything Italian and of course art. It doesn’t matter what level you are and in fact you may even catch me having a go during the week.
